Nice Points that you have brought up in this blog. I think that companies that block Facebook and other social networking tools like instant messaging are mostly clueless in the way the new wave of web applications work. Instead of embracing the new wave of web applications, using them to enhance worker's productivity and linkage to company and colleagues, they block it.

To these companies, the mentality of blocking these sites are simple. If I block these websites, my employees will do more productive work. In my opinion, they do not understand how humans work. The human attention span and the amount of time you can do focused, concentrated work is limited. After a while, it tapers off and the mind drifts to understand or solve problems subconsciously. These companies got to understand that not ALL work are brute force, hands on work.

I find it sad that some companies block all sorts of Instant Messaging, Social Networking sites and yet, call on their employees to be more creative, even to the extend of giving employees money for creative ideas. And suddenly, the turn over rate gets higher and higher and the management has no idea why.
